Meet Gidget, a Cherished Emotional support animal who earned a Gift of Mobility from Max’s Helping Paws

When the healing power of animals meets the kindness of the human spirit, magic can happen.

Carmel, CA, September 01, 2020 - Just ask Melinda Moxley, a CSU-Monterey Bay student and tutor who discovered the perfect therapy for her debilitating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder — a rescue dog named Gidget.

https://www.maxshelpingpaws.org/success-stories/2020/gidget-genetic-condition-repaired

Melinda found the 8-year old Chihuahua mix wandering the streets of South Central Los Angeles and gave her a safe home in Monterey.

This past May, Gidget grew ill, unable to stand or walk on all four legs. Melinda brought her into Pet Specialists of Monterey and they said she suffered from bilateral patellar luxation, a structural issue she most likely had since birth.

Dr. Michael Dearmin recommended a procedure called Bilateral Lateral Fabellar, which could give Gidget the ability to stand, walk and function normally.

A full-time student who suffers from a disability herself, Melinda was unable to afford such a surgery. So she turned to Max’s Helping Paws Foundation, a local nonprofit that helps families fund treatment for pets in crisis.

Melinda’s initial letter brought tears to the eyes of Max’s co-founder Dyanna Klein. It read, in part: “Gidget is the one I talk to, I laugh with, study next to on the floor, and my ‘co-pilot’ in life. Please help us.”

Klein, who founded the nonprofit in 2016 following the death of her 14-year-old Miniature Pinscher named Max, agreed to help fund the surgery.

“Melinda is a phenomenal pet mom, and we were thrilled to be able to help make the surgery happen for Gidget,” she said.

The procedure went off without a hitch and, according to Melinda, “Gidget is smiling again!”

“She is doing awesome,” said Melinda, who calls Gidget her emotional support animal. “We take daily walks to smell the flowers and she can actually push off of both back legs now to go up and down the curb. This was not possible before her surgery nor was she able to put weight on all four paws.”

Melinda found the time to express her gratitude to Klein and her foundation.

“We are truly grateful,” she said. “Every single day that we go out for our walks, we know it is possible because of you and your help.”

Max’s Helping Paws Eases Healing For Grieving Pet Owners Through "Rainbow Bridge Tribute Fund”

The passing of a beloved pet can leave us broken and disconsolate.

Carmel, CA, June 25, 2020 - The passing of a beloved pet can leave us broken and disconsolate. Tribute donations are a wonderful way to give in memory of others. Now, there is a unique way to help us heal, honor their memory while helping other pets in a health crisis. Rainbow Bridge Tribute Funds provide pet owners with your own virtual memorial that tells the story of your pet and shares that special relationship with friends and family who might wish to donate in your pet's memory. Most importantly, as the fund is distributed, each page will also share information about those helped in that pet's honor.

With an ongoing mission to help fund treatment for pets in crisis, the nonprofit Max’s Helping Paws Foundation (www.maxshelpingpaws.org) has created a convenient online form for pet owners to provide details so they can personalize their page with pet photos, stories and tributes, and easily be shared on social media. This private memorial fund requires a pledge of $1,000, however a $500 donation begins the set up process for your fund and page. This page can then be shared with others in an effort to reach the pledged amount.

The idea behind Rainbow Bridge came from a supporter of Max’s Helping Paws, Brittney Weinerth, who had lost her companion dog Abagail. Inspired by Max’s “Chestnut Fund” — to help pet owners experiencing severe and immediate personal financial loss resulting from the COVID-19 crisis — Brittney explained to Max’s founder, Dyana Klein, that it would be nice to have an “Abagail Fund” and invite her loved ones to donate to it, as during her grieving process, she struggled to find ways to relieve the pain and honor her bond with Abagail. “It would be really neat to see how the Abagail funds were used to make an impact for other animals,” she said. Klein obliged, and now Max’s is proud and pleased to offer the ability to set up a private Rainbow Bridge Fund in addition to its current Tribute Donation option.

Max’s Helping Paws Finds New Meaning in "There’s No Place Like Home” As They Switch From Sparkling Gala to Online Fundraiser

Max's Helping Paws’ theme for their now-cancelled May 9th fundraising gala, “An Evening in the Emerald City,” was based on Dorothy’s famous last line from the beloved ‘Wizard of Oz” movie.

Salinas, CA, May 01, 2020 - Max's Helping Paws’ theme for their now-cancelled May 9th fundraising gala, “An Evening in the Emerald City,” was based on Dorothy’s famous last line from the beloved ‘Wizard of Oz” movie. Today, this phrase, "there’s no place like home" has taken on new meaning.

The non-profit has incorporated the people, stories and information that would have been shared during “An Evening in the Emerald City” into a “Fundraiser-In-Place” website MAXSPAWS.ORG.

The fundraiser will run May 1-31, 2020.

The site, including a welcome video by well-known local pet-lover Dina Ruiz Eastwood, features messages from founders Dyana Klein and Dr. Jonathan Fradkin, program details, as well as interviews with donors, partners and pet owners. “In this crazy time when there is so much uncertainty, Max’s Helping Paws gives hope and peace of mind to people who simply can’t afford to care for their furry family members. I’m so proud to be part of it!” said Ruiz Eastwood.

“We’re so grateful to our generous gala sponsors who have continued to support the event during the transition to Fundraiser-in-Place. It’s important they know their participation is an essential component of our success,” said Dyana Klein.

Event Sponsors Include:

Pet Specialists of Monterey
Weathertech
Fremont Bank
Dawg Gone It Dog Daycare
Victor Medical
Carmel Valley Vet
IDEXX
Chidlaw Marketing

Mag One Media

Max's Helping Paws’ donors have offered a dollar-for-dollar match for the first $35,000 raised through the MAXSPAWS.ORG website.

The Foundation has helped nearly 250 local families fund treatment for pets in crisis, providing more than $200,000 in financial assistance.

“In this crazy time when there is so much uncertainty, Max’s Helping Paws gives hope and peace of mind to people who simply can’t afford to care for their furry family members,” said Ruiz Eastwood. “I’m so proud to be part of it and hope you consider making a donation.”
